This June, we're spreading awareness of scoliosis and facts about it. With treatment, observation, and appropriate follow-up care, most children can lead normal, active lives.
Scoliosis Awareness Month Facts about scoliosis
Scoliosis is where the spine twists and curves to the side.
It can affect people of any age, from babies to adults, but most often starts in children aged 10 to 15.
Scoliosis is not directly caused by bad posture. The most common type of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, which means that the cause is unknown. Although the exact cause of scoliosis is unclear, it may be caused due to a combination of genetic factors and environmental triggers such as trauma, malnutrition, infection, or hormone changes.
Most types of scoliosis are mild and do not require treatment with braces or surgery.
